A Triumphant Celebration of Womanhood at the 2024 Tribute To Women Festival

The 6th annual Malibongwe Arts Festival: Tribute To Women took over Mark’s Park in Emmarentia this past Sunday, 25 August 2024, bringing together thousands of attendees for a day filled with music, culture, and powerful reflections on the role of women in South Africa’s ongoing journey to freedom and equality. Against the backdrop of the nation’s 30th year of democracy, this festival stood as a testament to the strength, resilience, and creativity of South African women.

Organised by Sheer Entertainment and Breakout Events in collaboration with the South African Music Performance Rights Association (SAMPRA), this year’s festival continued to build on its legacy, offering an unforgettable experience. With more than 8,000 attendees last year, anticipation was high—and the 2024 event did not disappoint. Mark’s Park came alive with the soulful melodies of Zonke, Ringo Madlingozi, Mafikizolo, Jaziel Brothers, Nomfundo Moh, Kelvin Momo, and Lwah Ndlunkulu, who paid homage to the women whose contributions have shaped our cultural and social landscapes.

Reflecting on the festival’s significance, Joe Chakela, Executive Director of Sheer Entertainment, said, “Our journey with Malibongwe Arts Festival has been one of growth and evolution, mirroring the dynamic spirit of South African women. This festival is a collective celebration of our heritage and the transformative power of women’s contributions to our society. The turnout this year speaks to the passion and commitment of our community to honour the incredible women who continue to inspire us all.”

The festival wasn’t just about the music. It was a day of collective celebration and reflection, honouring the remarkable contributions of women over the past three decades highlighting their inspiring legacies of women such as Desire Ellis, Justice Mandisa Maya and Tatjiana Smith, to mention a few. Their courage and dedication were felt in every note sung and every performance delivered, reminding all attendees of the transformative power of women in society.

As the sun set on a day of celebration and unity, the 2024 Tribute To Women festival solidified its place as one of South Africa’s premier cultural events. Here is what some of the performers and attendees had to say:

  • “Tribute To Women is one amazing event, we always enjoy performing on that stage…” – Mafikizolo
