Unforgotten Season Four

If you’re intrigued by cold cases, come closer! Royal documentaries on BritBox

Dust off the commemorative royal china and settle down with a pot of Earl Grey as September serves up a feast of royal documentaries to savour on BritBox.

A sumptuous treat for South African fans of the royal family is Wedding of the Century, an exclusive BritBox Original. This feature-length documentary marks the 40th anniversary of Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s wedding on 29 July 1981, when a record 750 million people in 74 countries tuned in to see the blushing Lady Diana Spencer and the dapper Prince Charles exchange vows at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. The grainy wedding footage has been lovingly restored in this beautifully remastered film, which also features never-before-heard anecdotes from the day and exclusive interviews with royal insiders who worked behind the scenes on this iconic event.

Narrated by Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), Born to Royalty examines the realities of being raised in the British royal family, while in the two-part documentary Paxman on the Queen’s Children, veteran broadcaster Jeremy Paxman explores the lives and roles of Queen Elizabeth II’s children. In a similar vein, the three-part Queen Victoria’s Children charts the reign of Victoria through her relationships with Prince Albert and their nine children.

The short documentary William at 30 commemorates Prince William’s 30th birthday in 2012, Diana, 7 Days was commissioned by her sons in 2017 to mark the 20th anniversary of their mother’s death, while Diana: A Love Affair looks at the qualities that made the world fall in love with ‘the people’s princess’.

Rewinding several decades, Princess Margaret: The Royal Rebel profiles a royal who fascinated and scandalised the world, while mini-series The Queen Mother focuses on the life of Margaret and Elizabeth’s mother, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon – the ‘Queen Mum.
