First time in Africa: Star-studded comedy The Book of Clarence premieres on DStv Box Office this April

Boasting a stellar cast of A-list black actors and co-produced by rapper Jay-Z, The Book of Clarencemakes its long-awaited African premiere on DStv Box Office on 4 April 2024.

Starring Academy Award nominee LaKeith Stansfield, and written, directed and co-produced by BAFTA winner Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall), The Book of Clarence is a biblical comedy-drama with a fresh, unusual and funny twist.

Now, for the first time in Africa, DStv audiences will be the first to experience this thought-provoking film that shows sometimes, belief is a stronger transformative force than knowledge.

Actor and rapper LaKeith Stanfield (Judas and the Black Messiah, Straight Outta Compton, Selma) plays Clarence, a streetwise hustler in the Holy Land who struggles to carve out a better life for his family while fighting to free himself from debt.

Intrigued by the Messiah and his apostles, he risks everything in an audacious con to bring wealth and happiness to his loved ones, but ultimately discovers the redemptive power of belief.

Described by The Guardian as a “wacky counter-gospel action adventure” and by the New York Times as “enchanting”, The Book of Clarence also features Marianne Jean-Baptiste, RJ Cyler, Anna Diop, Omar Sy, David Oyelowo, Teyana Taylor and Alfre Woodard, with cameos by James McAvoy and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Explains rising British director Samuel, “As a storyteller, I want to give audiences something they’ve never seen before. The Book of Clarence is about a man’s journey of self-discovery.”

Stansfield adds that The Book of Clarence is about a dreamer and a man without faith, and his path towards “finding himself and his connection to God”. He says he admire Samuel’s unique storytelling style, always pushing boundaries and offering audiences something “new and exciting”.

Don’t miss this offbeat contemporary take on a man’s journey to find himself, set in the Holy Land and packed with action, drama, chariot chases and gladiator fights, with a sly wink at Monty Python’s comedy classic The Life of Brian.
