Lesego Tlhabi & Wendy Gumede talk ‘Sisters in Comedy’ on second episode of Mzansi Magic’s 'The Festive Get-Together'

The Festive Get-Together'

Comedy powerhouse friends, Lesego ‘Coconut Kelz’ Tlhabi and Wendy Gumede, are the celebrity guests on episode two of South Africa’s favourite festive season special, The Festive Get-Together in The Life Artois, this Thursday, November 24th, at 21h30 on Mzansi Magic (DSTV channel 161).

In the episode, friendship and sisterhood in comedy are the order of the day as Lesego and Wendy take us on a lighthearted, funny, and witty conversation behind the scenes of what makes life both absurd and special, and how they make time for each other even in the most challenging of times.

Hosted by Unathi Nkayi and presented by Stella Artois, The Festive Get-Together highlights celebrity pairs who share their journeys to success over a special meal and the challenges of getting together with those who matter most, including making time for friends and family.

Last week’s guests, The Soil, joined Unathi for a rare sit down on the group’s journey, including a “Stella Moment” where lead singer Ntsika Ngxanga, beatboxer Luphindo Ngxanga and vocalist Buhlebendalo Mda were each presented with a framed puzzle piece that makes up “The Soil” when placed together. This was the gesture from Native Rhythms founder and award-winning Executive Producer, Malambule, recognizing each member as integral to the group.

Pioneers in the digital comedy space, Lesego and Wendy spend a lot of time on the road working on their shows and content. Yet, as much as their careers are their top priorities, they always make time to connect with each other, spend time with family and take time off to reflect on their personal growth.

“It’s so refreshing to see women who work in a male dominated industry like comedy come together and demonstrate for one another the meaning of sisterhood and change the landscape of comedy in such a profound way. The conversation is both funny and poignant and not to be missed,” says Unathi Nkayi.

Lesego Thlabi is best known for her alter-ego, Coconut Kelz, which she calls a "caricature of a self-loathing black person who hilariously articulates collective white anxieties in post-apartheid South Africa”. Along with her skits that go viral online, Wendy Gumede, meanwhile is also a writer for some of the biggest shows on TV, aligned with her and Lesego’s common arc of comedy and current affairs.

In each episode, Unathi is also joined by a celebrity chef to create dishes for celebrity guests that invoke memories of love for their family & friends. In this episode, chef Neo Nontse creates a special feel-good menu of mood food dishes for Lesego and Wendy.

Neo started her career by sharing her recipes on her Instagram page, Dine With Neo, and followers started requesting she cook for them. This led to Neo opening her online restaurant, Dine With Neo, with Uber Eats, following which she has also just released a new recipe book, My Insta Feast.
