My Children My Africa.

Soweto Theatre Presents, My Children My Africa.

The long awaited Soweto Theatre Schools Setworks Festival is confirmed to kick off from 16 – 25 August 2022 with My children My Africa. Audiences will be treated to nine days of a back-to-back theatre experience targeted at grade10-12 learners in South African schools who read the play as part of their prescribed setworks in this year’s curriculum by the Gauteng Department of Education.

Written by Athol Fugard's in 1989 shortly before the end of the apartheid, "My children My Africa!" presents an honest portrait of South Africa on the brink of a revolution, and it is also a testament to the power and potential of youth, hope and ideas.

Produced by Nobulali Productions, the stage play is set in South Africa and examines relevant issues like apartheid, race relations, and the effects of European colonialism. It enables learners to understand that during the 1980s,

young people were leaders in the resistance against Apartheid, especially against Bantu Education.

According to drama and literature researchers, when learners watch theatre plays that are prescribed as school set work, their vocabulary increases, they are offered an enhanced knowledge of the plot and develop a greater tolerance as well as an improved ability to read the emotions of others.

The play is set in South Africa and examines relevant issues like apartheid, race relations, and the effects of European colonialism. It aims to allow learners to understand that during the 1980s, young people were leaders in the resistance against Apartheid, especially against Bantu Education and the segregation that was enforced by the Dutch and British colonizers.

All these reasons made Fugard to write his "My Children! My Africa!" and today, Nobulali productions is proudly producing and bringing the book to life and revived with a fresh and young cast to resonate with today’s audiences.
